Maria Szymanowska, Album per pianoforte

for piano, PWM 9026

A selection of Maria Szymanowska’s most interesting piano works. Her compositions – often described as pre-Romantic – were highly valued by her contemporaries; Robert Schumann appreciated their form and delicate tone. She also influenced the work of Fryderyk Chopin. Like him, she wrote mazurkas, polonaises and nocturnes. Her pieces are simple in form, without polyphonic elements, but they can present a real stylistic challenge to the pianist.
